Masterpiece Academy presentation notes

Sokartis: How to come up with and start a business.
He talked to his uncle about starting a business because his uncle owns 3 burger shops. His uncle said that he went to college to gain the knowledge he needed and dropped out and started his business. Sokartis is tied between starting a business on burgers or video games.

Michelle: why do people still judge in today's society?
Serotonin - we are junkies for the happy chemicals, they makes us feel happy and worthy. We judge others because we either don't know them too well yet, or we don't agree with their beliefs. If we learn to love ourselves maybe we won't judge others.

MGOM

I am looking more into people's perspectives about the Afterlife and whether it exists or not.

There are scientists researching this topic as well.

I will be sharing the research people have found on the afterlife.

WE EAT SOCIAL MEDIA FOR BREAKFAST

Dr. Preston's tone in his post titled, "We eat social media for breakfast," is surprised. The first sentence is, " This weekend I did something I swore I would never do." Dr. Preston finds himself taking pictures of his breakfast, and sending them to someone. His diction and syntax, is not exactly straight to the point, but instead he goes into further detail of the reason behind his action. Dr. Preston goes on to say that you need the right tool for the right job, and his use of rhetorical questions, attract the reader's attention. He also mentions that the Internet is not just a tool, it is the way we communicate. Dr. Preston explains that he thought about all of this before he texted pictures of his breakfast. The reason Dr. Preston texted pictures of his breakfast was because he missed someone, that someone being his daughter, and he wished he was having breakfast with her at that moment. He shares with us his views, on how pictures are different from when he was a kid. Back then, pictures were expensive and rare, but now we have them at our fingertips. Our pictures depict our lives, and how we live them, " Our pictures create impressions; others who view our lives online come to "know" our identities through our photo streams." Ultimately, the message Dr. Preston is trying to get us to understand, is to consider what tools we will need for our job, in order to be successful at sharing our stories.

IGNITE TALK

1. My Big Question is, Is there an Afterlife?

2. The one thing I did over spring break to explore my topic is: I looked up stories about people who claim they've been to Heaven.

3. One thing I learned by exploring over the break was about a Neurosurgeon who was skeptical about near-death experiences, until he had one when he went into a coma.

4. One connection between my topic and something we've read is Young Goodman Brown when he questions whether Heaven is real or not, just like some of us.

5. What I'm doing next is, I will be continuing my research on the afterlife.

Fahrenheit 451 Essay

Ray Bradbury's tone towards Clarisse and Captain Beatty is completely different from each other but that's what makes it their characters all the more interesting. One big difference between the two, would be their outlook on life. Clarisse is a very curious young girl, that hardly watches Tv, and loves talking and watching people. While Captain Beatty is a Fireman, and takes pride in his job even explaining to Montag that Firemen are, "... Official censors, judges, executors. That's you, Montag, and that's me." Despite this, Captain Beatty often will use quotes from books when speaking. In a way, Captain Beatty is the "bad guy" and Clarisse is the guide that helps Montag get into a world very different from the one they live in, which is a world with books.

Fahrenheit 451 guiding questions pp133-147

1.  The significance of the apple, milk, and pear is that Montag said to him that would be a sign that the world would accept him and give him the time he needs to think about the things that need to be thought about.

2. Montag saw a deer which he mistook it for the mechanical hound.

3. He sees a fire and says he never knew fire could warm something instead of burning it.

4. Granger wrote a book, Fred Clement was a former of the Thomas Hardy Chair at Cambridge, Dr. Simmions studied Ethics at Columbia University, Reverend Padover has given many lecture over 30 years.

5. The Helicopters corner in on a guy walking down the street and set the mechanical hound on him.  However, the guy is not Montag.

6. Granger means that they rebelled against society and the Government, and it was the right decision for them, but others might think it was a mistake.

A STEP AHEAD OF THE HOUND

1. Montag hid the remaining books in the house of a fireman.

2. Faber tells Montag how it's funny that the war seems so remote because they have their own troubles.

3. Faber gives Montag a Tv the size of a postal card.

4. The Tv was showing a new Mechanical Hound being dropped off at the site of the burning. They also tell viewers to watch out for a man running alone.

5. The Tv reports that police suggest that everyone look outside on the count of 10 because Montag can't escape so many people looking for him. But Montag is running to reach the river so he won't be caught.

RUN MONTAG RUN

I think Montag will be caught and sent to prision for his crimes. Also, the will find out that Faber was an accomplice.

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

THE CHASE IS ON

1. Because the Hound sensed what Montag was doing, and the Hound's jon is to kill those who disobey the rules of society.

2. He defended himself by setting the Hound on fire.

3. Montag realizes that Beatty wanted to die because he said things that made Montag mad and he didn't try to stop Montag.

4. Montag went to Professor Faber's house.

5. Montag was almost hit but a car filled with teens. But Montag fell and they swerved.

MONTAG KILLS

I think Montag turned the flamethrower on Captain Beatty because Beatty saw the earpiece in Montag's ear and said that he will trace it back to his friend. So Montag did this in order to protect Professor Faber.

Fahrenheit 451 questions part 2

1. Montag is confused but he wants to understand what he's reading. Mildred is confused and doesn't want to understand what she's reading.

2.  Montag is scared because he find Mildred has overdosed and the bombers flying over let is know that he is devastated. In section two, Montag is having a realization about the world they live in today and how messed up it is.

3. Professor Faber used to be a English professor, montag and him had a conversation a long time ago on a bench in the park.

4. Montag is trying to memorize the book before he has to return it to Captain Beatty, and he can't do so because a commercial on the subway is distracting him.

5. Professor Faber says that what Montag needs is in the books.

6. The small green metal object is an earpiece Faber made that allows him to communicate long distance.

7. The white clown shows a lot of violence and people laughing at it. This is today's entertainment.

8. She cries because she doesn't understand what Montag is reading.

9. Montag goes to the Fire station to turn in the book to Captain Beatty so he can burn it.

Tuesday, March 14, 2017

Fahrenheit 451 questions 1-12

1. Maybe because some people enjoy watching or setting things on fire.

2. Because when Montag burns the book, the pages year off and "flap" away with the wind.

3. Montag does not question anything, while Clarisse questions everything.

4. Well Ray Bradbury was describing a flat screen tv which was not real back then but is now. I do not think it improves either of their lives because they do not seem to be happy.

5. He introduces us to Montag at this point in his life because it is about to change.

6. Because Mildred probably isn't that important to the story other than she's Montag's wife.

7.

8. Operators came to pump out Mildred's stomach because she overdosed.

9. The mechanical hound is a dog that punishes anyone who breaks society's rules.

10. Society considers Clarisse anti-social becaud she likes to talk and go out and do stuff, and Clarisse and Society have very different definition of what being social and anti-social is.

11. She lights the match because she is going to set herself and everything on fire.

12. They seem unhappy together, and they don't really love each other or have anything in common.

Fahrenheit 451 first impression

In the beggining Bradbury is describing a fire
Clarisse is the future and she's different from everyone

Firemen start fires now instead if putting then out but Clarisse asks him about the origin if firemen and he says houses are fire proof and they start fires.

The imagery of Gatsby and Prufrock

1. Desire. Both Gatsby and Prufrock had a desire to be with certain girls. However, they both failed and while Gatsby was almost able to be with Daisy, Prufrock could not even speak to the girl he liked.

2. Loneliness. Prufrock is lonely and so is Gatsby. Even though Gatsby throws big parties and is surrounded by people, he is lonely. While Prufrock does not speak to anyone.

3. Trapped. Gatsby and Prufrock are trapped in their dreams of wanting to be with the girl they love. Prufrock is trapped within himself because he is too timid to do anything, and Gatsby is trapped by living in the past and wanting things to be the way they used to be.

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock

Throughout the poem, it had a negatived tone. Prufrock is trying to get the girl of his dreams but he is too afraid to even speak to her. He feels that he is is worthless, and is afraid to die. He wants to do a lot of things but he cannot because he is too timid. The poem does not have a happy ending and is basically telling us you are who you are, you cannot change that. I enjoyed reading the poem, in a way it was refreshing to have a story end on an unhappy one.

CAN WE WATCH THE MOVIE?

I think we should watch the movie in order to get a better understanding and compare the movie to the book.

Friday, March 3, 2017

Prufrock first impressions

The poem is very descriptive, the beggining is in Itallian, the tone of the first and second stanza is threatening.

There is a extended metaphor in the second stanza.

The narrator of the poem says that there is a lot of time including to create and murder.

MUSIC AS LITERATURE

I believe that music can be considered literature because when you hear it, you not only feel a certain way but you come up with an image based on what the song is describing, the same way you do with a book or poem.
